Checkered Flags Promotes a Collaborative Approach to Student Mental Health and Well Being in HPE

The Checkered Flags mental health resource guidebook is designed to assist teachers and support staff, school administrators, community service providers, and parents/ caregivers in responding promptly and effectively to the difficulties and challenges that students face, to promote a collaborative approach within our community, and to increase the level of awareness and access to effective supports and services.

With the ongoing support of Jane Torrance and the Checkered Flags Steering Committee of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, and Prescott-Russell, work began on a Hastings-Prince Edward version in 2011.  Special thanks to ALCDSB, HPEDSB, Children’s Mental Health Services, City of Belleville, Recreation, Culture & Community Services, Counselling Services of Belleville & District, Highland Shores Children’s Aid, Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit, and Youthab.  Coordination was provided by Diane Newman Reed – Student Support Leadership Initiative (SSLI) and Wendy Anderson – Children and Youth Services Network.

The finished product was launched and distributed at a series of all-day Mental Health Supports and Connections workshops – facilitated by mental health leads Donalda Simmons and Melanie Dunlop, along with Megan Luke and Jennifer Sawkins from Children’s Mental Health Services.  These six sessions, which also featured “No Wrong Door” training, were attended by approximately 400 teachers, support staff, school administrators and community service providers.

Copies of Checkered Flags are in the process of being distributed to CYSN member organizations and community partners.  To request a copy, or to explore membership on the CYSN, please go to CONTACT US.
